Lying to the west of the Canadian Rockies, the
Purcell Mountains face the Rockies across the long Rocky Mountain
Trench. Being much older than their neighbours, the Purcells are
generally 1000 to 2000 feet lower than the Rockies.
Often confused with the Selkirk Mountains to the north, the Purcells
have higher peaks.
The Purcell Mountains were first identified on a map prepared in
1859 by the Palliser Expedition. This expedition had been sent from
England to explore routes suitable for a railway across British
North America. The mountains were named for Goodwin Purcell, a medical
doctor and teacher in Cork, and a member of the committee to select
officers for the Palliser Expedition. |
